evaluation

Bellow is the evaluation of my A2 media film assignment:

Our final a level media assignment was to produce a short movie that has been researched written filmed and finally edited by our group. Just like for AS level the progress we made has been written on a blog in a sort of journal site fashion. This is good because it allows us to upload sketches photographs and even films for the general public to see. It is also good to receive feedback on this online tool.

The film that our group created is called “what friends are for” which follows the genre pattern of crime drama set in a small village and local town. The plot consists of a teenage boy buying his first car and has it stolen. It starts with the two boys meeting at a bus stop in a small village and through a series of flashback editing tells the story of his car being stolen and unknown to the kid who has his car stolen, it is his friend who is the car thief. The target audience for this film we decided as a group would be 16-24 year olds mainly due to the car theft and getaway scenes. Also the twist in the plot could be hard to grasp for younger audiences.

The filming of the scenes took a few weeks and due to technical difficulties with the sound leaving us having to re-film a whole 2 scenes meant that it took a lot longer than expected. This also meant that we had to be very organised with what clothes to wear on different days. The idea of wearing jackets instead of recognisable clothes was a good one and made it a lot easier than having bad wardrobe solutions. One small issue we had when filming was we were only using one camera which meant that when we needed a different shot we had to act again. This made it difficult to edit so that the film looked continuous. However in the editing stage I think that we did a good job. It also helped that we had the help of Rob who is very handy with editing software due to his prior experience in the media. This also meant that I and Benj were able to learn a lot more about the software that we were using. One controversial shot in our group was the CCTV shot in the car park which was very tricky to film and it took us a long time to find the effect but after much perseverance and searching the net we found one that worked and I personally am very pleased with the end result.

Another task we had to complete for this project was a poster for our film. This was again like the film done in team so we could put our heads together to really make a good result. The main picture we used for the poster was taken from the shooting shots because of the large amount of background space which could be used to put information on and also the central position of the car. We managed to complete this in a one hour lesson thanks to our experience of Photoshop and publishing software that we gained on the magazine assignment for AS level.

One of the individual tasks we were set was to create a review page for our film like would be seen in empire film review magazine. This was familiar territory for me personally because of the experience we got with music magazines last year. Using publishing software I think I was able to create an authentic looking magazine double page spread.

In all honesty I think that our group worked well together as a team and I would be happy to do another assignment similar to this in future. However one criticism I would have is that being new to filming and the result of this was the face during filming at one point a microphone was not turned on resulting in the re-film of a lot of our film. I think the work commitment of each member of the team was unfaulted. The one team member that I must give credit to is Rob Matthews because of his prior experience with editing software was a saviour when it came to the editing stage and had to put up with a lot of mess ups from me and Benj.

If I were to change anything about the film it would be at the start when we meet the two main characters in the film I do not believe that it is obviously clear they are both friends. I think we could have possibly added in a small montage before to make this clearer. However this is nitpicking really I am very pleased with the end result.
I would be happy to work with Rob and Benj again on another project if the offer were there and I am very proud of the film that we put together.

Bellow are some of the photos i took.

From these i should be able to make a good magazine cover. I had a lot of trouble with lighting because of the dark hall and bright light so some of the images appear a little blurred. I think that These images will be ok small on the front cover

Jazz times media essay

I was asked to write an essay with all the points from my first jazz times analysis.
here is the original analysis:

here is the essay after it:
The jazz times
The magazine I am going to analyse in this essay is called the Jazz times. This uses its cover in many ways to attract the target audience and inform people of what resides inside the covers.

The institution behind the Jazz Times dates back very far. It was original named Radio Free but due to popular coverage it earned it name change to Jazz Times in the 1980s. It is now the ‘world leading Jazz publication’. In terms of institutions like the BBC and Fox it is relatively small but it is a lot more specialized than them. However it is still sold globally and is very much international.

The audience for this magazine is relatively small but also very easy to identify. This is because the magazine is very specialized on the subject of Jazz so therefore only real Jazz fans would buy it. I think the ideal audience for this magazine would be 40-60 year old men who are big fans of Jazz. This is because this is the age-group that has lived through the prime time for jazz in about the mid 1980s. This magazine has very good circulation and is available from most good newsagents. It is also available through a subscription that is available on the magazines website and also available on the phone.

The magazine represents a lot of both positive things. The cover is done with very mellow colours like white purple in a very contrasting manner. This is to represent the people in the magazines passion for Jazz. I think it also represents a love for peace and the fact they don’t care who is reading their magazine as long as they have a love for Jazz and promotes a classless and a no racism lifestyle. I think it also represents their passion for pure and classy music.

The magazine uses many techniques to attract its target audience. One of these techniques is to use a hook. This is a small area of the front cover that has a not very detailed phrase. In this case it is ‘why vinyl still rules’. This is to attract the other generation that might like to collect records and also people that are nostalgic about when records were popular.

Another one of these techniques is to use a callout. This is a small quote from an article written inside the magazine by a celebrity or a well known person. It has to be a phrase they say that makes people think. In the case of the jazz times it is Rob Haynes saying ‘I am not letting a metronome hang loose.

Another feature that the magazine uses to attract the target audience and also keep old readers for repeat business is to keep regularity going in the magazine. This means that from issue to issue the title and style of the magazine stays the same. This includes font, colours and regular features within.

The jazz times also uses an inch column. This is a small column on the cover of the magazine which very briefly tells people of the main stories within the magazine. Examples of these on the jazz times are: Latin Jazz leaders, before and after Matt Wilson.

summer work questionaire report

For some more summer work we were asked to ask some people about their preferences in the media. I wrote mine up in a report style essay:

Summer work-Questionnaire report
I was asked to talk to 10 people of different ages and ask their views on the media. I talked to a 4 year old, an 8 year old, a 11 year old, a 14 year old, a 22 year old, a 32 year old, a 38 year old, a 47 year old, a 62 year old and an 83 year old.

The first question I asked was which types of media did the person use the most. The children told me that the television was the most prominent use of media they had. With the teenager and the 22 year old the internets were the most popular. I think this is down to popular programs on the internet like msn and websites like bebo. Then I found that the 32, 38 and 47 year olds the television and news paper were the most prominent. The older people than this told me that they only read the newspaper.

The next question I asked was whether they thought the media affected the way they make decisions. With the children for this their parents told me that they come out with a lot of Americanised phrases and words. I also found that middle-aged people did not feel the media influence them in any way. The 62 and 83 year old told me that they were intimidated by the stories they read in the newspapers.
The next question I asked was how easy they thought it was for them to access the media. Both children didn’t seem to have an opinion on this, the 14 year old told me that it was difficult for him to access news that was relevant to him because he found it hard to watch the proper news. The 22 year old told me that she accessed the news on the internet. The middle aged people told me that they either watched the news on television every night after work the 62 year old told me she watched it on the telly and in her newspaper but the 83 year told me she sometimes found it hard to keep up with the news because she gets a weekly newspaper.

The next question I asked was how well they think the media has developed over the last ten years. This question was pretty much irrelevant to the children. The 14 year old told me he thought that the media had developed in such a way that it is so easy for him to find things out. The 22 year old told me she thought that the media had too much influence on people’s lives because it had grown so much. The 32 year old told me that he thought the media has outgrown its needs and that it is very over powerful. The 38 year old told me he thought the media had grown out of control and was a too powerful influential weapon. The 47 year old told me she thought that the media sometimes scares her in the fact that it influences the government in its decision making. The 62 year old and 83 year old told me she fears the fact the media has got so big.

Jazz times Analysis

we were asked to do an analysis of a music magazine front cover. I decided to be different and do the jazz times (also so i wouldnt be distracted). It really helped me to learn some key media technology

powerpoint Work from summer on magazines

Mr Girvan set us some work to do over the summer with a powerpoint. Basically we had to find our most read magazine and identify some key features on the front cover.

I know the ideas on it are very basic but it was before i took on media as a full time course.
